West Ham: The question Bayer Leverkusen needs answering before signing Konstantinos Mavropanos

West Ham United now face the prospect of losing Konstantinos Mavropanos to Bayer Leverkusen.

It is a surprise to many that the Greece international has stuck around to this point of the summer.

He was a true colossus last season and was deservedly named Player of the Year at the London Stadium.

That happened despite relegation from the Premier League, but himself and Axel Disasi arguably deserved a better end result.

As a result, many expected him to seal an exit rather than featuring in the Championship.

Mavropanos could now head towards the exit door as Leverkusen consider a move.

The 28-year-old is coming off the back of a positive campaign from a personal perspective.

He was solid at the back as his strength and aerial talents certainly made a difference to push the prospect of relegation to the final day.

That hasn't gone unnoticed as he has picked up glowing reviews and interest from elsewhere.

German outlet Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger reported on Wednesday that the signing of Mavropanos is a possibility for Bayer Leverkusen.

They are looking for defensive cover this summer and could turn to the centre-back.

The report suggests that Die Werkself are asking whether they are, "convinced by the Greek player to be willing to pay the transfer fee and salary".

That one question will have a telling say on whether the Bundesliga outfit make a move for Mavropanos, but it will ultimately come down to the Hammers.

How much could West Ham demand for Mavropanos?

The 1997-born defender is under contract in East London until the summer of 2028.

That gives the Irons a leg up in any negotiations should any sort of offer come in for the ex-Arsenal man.

He linked up with the claret and blue outfit in 2023 as part of a £17m deal with Stuttgart.

Should Mavropanos move on three years later, the E20 side would likely want to make a profit on that.

Reports have suggested that the Hammers could hold out for around £30m this summer.

Tie that in with reported wages of £50,000-per-week, and it gives Bayer Leverkusen the information they desire before making a decision over a potential swoop.
