West Ham should try bring in Tammy Abraham says Dean Saunders

Former Wales striker Dean Saunders has said the one area West Ham most need to strengthen is up front, and picked out Tammy Abraham as the key candidate.

The Chelsea academy product has shone for Roma in Italy since leaving Stamford Bridge last summer, scoring 15 goals in Serie A as Jose Mourinho’s side fights to secure European qualification.

And Saunders believes he’s exactly what West Ham need if they are to continue their remarkable rise under David Moyes.

“I think this is the best West Ham team I’ve ever seen,” he said on talkSPORT Breakfast (28 April).

“They need a striker, (Michail) Antonio is playing well but his goals have dried up a bit.

“Tammy Abraham, go and sign him… when he played for Bristol City all of his goals were in the box.

“He gets on the end of proper strikers’ goals, when you make the chances, he’s there and I think he’s a good player and a good goalscorer.”

Depth Required

It’s been an area that has been the elephant in the room at the London Stadium ever since Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax in January 2021.

Antonio has put in an admirable shift as the clubs only recognised senior striker but it’s clear to see the toll that responsibility has taken on the 32-year-old, having not netted since the FA Cup defeat to Southampton in a gruelling campaign.

Even if the Irons only had the Premier League to focus on it would still be ludicrous to expect Antonio to maintain form over the entirety of the season but given the club’s newfound success in Europe, it becomes even more nonsensical.

It will clearly be an area West Ham will look at regardless of the outcome of the Europa League and several rumours have already swirled as to whom they may look to bring in.

Abraham certainly isn’t a bad shout from Saunders, although there will be no shortage of interest in his services after an impressive debut campaign in Italy.

Regardless of who they eventually sign, it’s vital West Ham make the right investments to ensure this meteoric rise doesn’t end as a mere flash in the pan.

In other West Ham news, Alan Shearer was full of praise for this Irons’ ace after his performances against Chelsea.
