West Ham respond as bid submitted for Edson Alvarez – Fabrizio Romano

West Ham have rejected a loan bid from AS Monaco for Edson Alvarez, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The renowned Italian journalist reported on 12 January that an offer for the Mexican international was dismissed but talks are set to continue between the clubs.

He added that while the Ligue 1 club can offer Champions League football, the Hammers consider Alvarez, whose contract expires in 2028, to be an important asset so a deal will not be easy.

The 27-year-old has featured 16 times in the Premier League for the Irons so far this season, starting 11 times.

Alvarez unlikely to leave West Ham

The 83-cap Mexico international has failed to impose himself as a key starter at the London Stadium since his move from Ajax in August 2023.

Under Julen Lopetegui, the star failed to impress and showed a lack of discipline, already notching two red cards this season and picking up 21 bookings in 61 total appearances for the Irons.

Graham Potter may be able to turn the former Club America midfielder into the kind of star that supporters thought that they were getting when he signed.

The Hammers would likely demand a fee in excess of the £35 million that they paid for his services if he was to leave East London.

If they can secure a fee above the £35m that he was signed for, the Hammers should consider a sale and let the former Chelsea manager have more leeway in the market.

Alvarez needs a big second half of the campaign if he stays in London, otherwise he may find himself on the chopping block in the summer.
