West Ham officials already worry they won’t receive £19m from pre-agreed London Stadium exit

West Ham didn’t have the best transfer window as they missed out on a number of targets.

Graham Potter will have again been left annoyed on deadline day as West Ham missed out on the loan signing of Axel Disasi.

The Hammers did manage to get a deal over the line for Igor Julio from Brighton.

However, supporters had hoped that a midfielder would have been signed, with Hayden Hackney on West Ham’s radar for much of the summer.

The Hammers have now been handed another possible blow following a transfer update coming out of East London.

West Ham believe Edson Alvarez’s buy clause won’t be activated

Edson Alvarez was a key West Ham departure as he joined Fenerbahce on loan until the end of the season.

The midfielder’s form dropped off last season as he scored just one goal in 28 appearances, and was keen to leave.

Alvarez’s move to Fenerbahce includes a pre-agreed option to buy worth £19million, which can be activated in the summer of 2026.

However, according to The Athletic, although the deal features the option to buy, West Ham’s hierarchy do not believe the clause will be activated.

The Mexican was signed by Jose Mourinho, but with uncertainty over who will replace the serial winner, he may no longer be in the Turkish side’s plans.

His departure left the Hammers short in midfield, and Potter elected to replace Alvarez with Mateus Fernandes, who cost £40million.

Soungoutou Magassa was also drafted in from Monaco for £17million, but there is still a hole in the middle of the park should the pair get injured.

Edson Alvarez can play for West Ham again

It was assumed after he pushed for a move this summer that Alvarez would likely never play again for the Hammers.

However, like James Ward-Prowse, the Mexican could return from his loan next season and become part of the first-team squad again.

Given the Irons’ shocking recruitment this summer, they will likely be left short again in the summer of 2026, and Alvarez would add much-needed depth.

The 27-year-old has already made his debut in a Turkish Super League match against Genclerbirligi, which Fenerbahce won 3-1.

If Alvarez continues to stay sharp this season, there is no reason why Potter wouldn’t welcome the midfielder back next season.
