West Ham most interested Premier League club in Lille defender Sven Botman

West Ham are among a number of Premier League clubs who are in the hunt to sign Lille centre-back Sven Botman, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster reported via their Transfer Centre on Wednesday [10:22am] that Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Newcastle, Norwich and Tottenham have all shown varying degrees of interest in the in the 21-year-old defender but none are more keen than the Hammers.

It is understood that Serie A side Atalanta and clubs in the Bundesliga are also pursuing the Netherlands Under-21 international, with Lille ready to slap a big price on their left-footed defender.

Sky Sports’ report adds: “Sky Sports News has been told that, should a team come in with a similar offer to the £27m they earned for Gabriel, Lille could give it genuine consideration – and Bundesliga clubs are also keeping tabs on his situation.”

Get it done

There’s no time for messing around here, if West Ham want to sign Botman that badly then they need to make a move as soon as possible.

It’s no surprise that the Dutch centre-back is wanted across Europe.

He was instrumental in helping Lille win the Ligue 1 title last season, starting all but one of their matches in France’s top-flight.

The former Ajax and Heerenveen defender would also be perfect for David Moyes whenever he wants to play with a back-three as he’s left-footed and can sit on that side of the defence.

Lille mostly played with a back-four last season, which also suits Moyes, but it’s just an extra option for the Irons manager to have after he lost Fabian Balbuena at the end of last season.

Botman was one of the stars of the show in European club football last term and signing him would show just how much the Hammers mean business.

Yes, £27million would be a lot – but that can be seen as a discounted rate.

French football clubs are struggling with the financial cost of the COVID-19 pandemic and there’s no doubt that a defender of his quality should be worth more.
