West Ham make approach to hijack deal for Nottingham Forest ace Morato

West Ham United have entered the Morato transfer sweepstakes.

Nuno Espirito Santo has signed just the one defender so far this summer in Joel Veltman.

The veteran is capable of playing in central defence, but is more of a natural full-back.

So, bolstering his ranks here before Tuesday's deadline could be a very shrewd move by the Hammers boss.

And it would appear West Ham have got an iron in the fire for Nottingham Forest's Morato.

Who are West Ham trying to beat to Morato's signature?

Despite being relegated to the Championship, West Ham's history and reputation will still act as a significant transfer draw to many.

That's what they're hoping to lean on when it comes to Morato too.

The Daily Mail claims on Monday that Nottingham Forest have fielded an enquiry from West Ham for the Brazilian defender.

He's also reported to have been in talks with Serie A giants Roma, whom clearly would be tough opposition for the Irons to beat.

But what is Morato's contract status at the City Ground, and does it work for or against West Ham?

Why Nottingham Forest hold all the Morato cards

Signed by Forest in the summer of 2024 from Benfica, Morato has since made 66 competitive appearances for the Tricky Trees.

However, out of his 47 Premier League outings for them, only 20 have been as part of the starting lineup.

Upon joining Forest, Morato penned a five-year deal, meaning his current contract isn't set to expire until the summer of 2029.

As a result, Forest may not be in any great rush to sell before Tuesday's deadline, and can hold out for a premium fee.

So if West Ham do indeed want him, then a permanent transfer could be quite a costly one, so a loan move may be the smarter option if possible.
