West Ham-linked Marcus Edwards shuts down transfer speculation with new contract

Reported West Ham target Marcus Edwards has ended recent transfer speculation over his future by signing a new contract with Portuguese side Vitoria SC.

In December, TEAMtalk reported that the Hammers were interested in signing Edwards but these hopes look to have been dashed for the time being.

This news follows the departures of Robert Snodgrass and Sebastien Haller who look set to join West Brom and Ajax respectively with David Moyes needing attacking reinforcements.

The Portuguese club announced on Thursday that Edwards had signed a new deal that contained a €50million release clause.

This shows how highly Vitoria rate their key man and the contract offer is perhaps a response to the rumoured interest from West Ham and other Premier League clubs.

Edwards only has one goal and two assists in 11 league outings for Vitoria this season which doesn’t suggest that he is worth €50million but the 22-year-old still has bags of potential.

Edwards doesn’t strike you as the type of player that David Moyes is looking to bring to West Ham.

We have seen Moyes’ struggles this season with Said Benrahma who came to the club with no Premier League experience and he has struggled to produce anything meaningful despite being fun to watch.

Moyes will always choose substance over flamboyance and with Edwards’ numbers not looking too impressive this season it is doubtful that the Hammers boss would have sanctioned a move for the winger.

The Irons could do with some attacking back up now Haller and Snodgrass are on their way out of the London Stadium.

On the wide attacking front, the Hammers have plenty of options but Michail Antonio remains the only first-team forward at the club.

This is something Moyes will have to rectify in the near future as he continues to drive West Ham towards a European finish in the Premier League.
