West Ham in significant Evan Ferguson transfer development as Arsenal watch on

West Ham are eager to fight off competition from Arsenal and Fulham to sign Evan Ferguson, according to GiveMeSport.

The news outlet reported online (3 January) that the Hammers might be forced to wait until the final stages of the January transfer window to discover if a loan deal for the Brighton striker is possible despite having already made direct contact with the Seagulls about a move [via talkSPORT, 2 January].

In what is described as a “significant twist”, Brighton are ready to fight off advances from West Ham, Arsenal and Fulham in the coming days in case of any injury problems and will look to reassess the situation toward the end of the winter window.

Ferguson was once valued at more than £100million [via talkSPORT, 14 November 2023]. However, the striker has seen his minutes limited at the Amex Stadium this season, and the Hammers have already made contact with Ferguson’s agents as a result [via TEAMtalk, 2 January].

West Ham to sign Brighton striker Evan Ferguson in January?

Ferguson would be a very exciting signing in East London.

One of West Ham’s main struggles this season has been scoring goals, with only six teams in the Premier League having found the back of the net fewer times than Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Therefore, it is no surprise that Ferguson is on the club’s radar, especially with Michail Antonio unavailable and Niclas Füllkrug struggling to adapt to life in English football.

However, a move for the 20-year-old could also be viewed as a risk. Although he has demonstrated he can score goals in the Premier League, he is still incredibly young and hasn’t performed at a high level consistently.

In addition, due to his age and inexperience, he will likely need a bit more time than the average signing to settle into his new surroundings, and considering he would only be joining on loan for half a season, that might not suit Lopetegui, who will want a player to come in and hit the ground running.
