West Ham in contact over summer swoop for Nottingham Forest ace Joe Worrall

West Ham have been in talks over a potential summer swoop to sign Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing on Twitter on Sunday morning, the Sun journalist reported that the Hammers have “been making calls” on the 24-year-old with David Moyes in the hunt to sign a new defender.

It is understood Burnley and Norwich are also admirers of the English defender.

Extra depth

Worrall is someone who has been linked with a move away from Nottingham Forest and to the Premier League for some time.

He’s only 24-years-old but has made 128 Championship appearances for the East Midlands outfit while he also played 32 times for Rangers while on loan at Ibrox in 2018/19.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post in March, Forest manager Chris Hughton hailed Worrall for being mature beyond his years.

Hughton said: “We’ve got a lot of experience in the dressing room. Joe is a younger one but has got an older head.

“He wouldn’t be the first one of that making. But you want as many good, serious footballers as possible. Joe falls into that category.

“He is still a young player.

“In some terms he’s not, because he’s played a lot of football and a lot of games, but still, by age, he’s a youngish player.

“And yes, he’s captain material.”

While we wouldn’t expect Worrall to move to the London Stadium in the summer and snatch the captain’s armband away from Mark Noble and Declan Rice, having a leader in the backline is something that we could do with.

As good as Craig Dawson has been, he’s in his 30s now and he’s not the most vocal of centre-backs.

Issa Diop is 24 like Worrall but hasn’t really shown signs of being a leader while Fabian Balbeuan seems exit-bound.

Angelo Ogbonna is perhaps the best leader in our defence at the moment but as Worrall is young, English and showing all the makings of being someone who could help organise a defence in the Premier League.

Let’s see where this one goes but for extra depth, it wouldn’t hurt to have him.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made contact over a deal to sign this Southampton player.
