West Ham have reignited their interest in RB Leipzig striker Hee-Chan Hwang
West Ham want to sign RB Leipzig striker Hee-Chan Hwang according to German outlet Sport1.
The report claims the Hammers were interested in the 25-year-old in January, and negotiations are believed to be in a “hot phase”.
That could mean a deal is being constructed, with Leipzig demanding around €15million [£13million] for the forward.
Everton are also said to be in the running for the South Korean, who has “never really [been] happy in Leipzig”, per the report.
Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsman reportedly denied Hwang a winter move but with the manager set to move to Bayern Munich, it is possible the striker could leave, especially as he has started just one league match this term.
Complete striker
There is a lot to like about Hwang and it is surprising he has not been given more of a chance at Leipzig.
After all, Hwang scored 11 goals and assisted 12 in 27 league appearances for RB Salzburg in 2019/20, which earned him the move to Germany.
Given a run in the team he could contribute to goals at the London Stadium, and at £13million he would be a relatively low-risk addition.
He will have a point to prove after an unsuccessful spell in the Bundesliga too.
Hwang also has Champions League experience, and has three goals and five assists in nine games in the competition.
If we do qualify for Europe we will need players who know that scene, and David Moyes must strengthen the quality of our backup options.
Hwang would be a good addition alongside a more proven Premier League attacker – Abraham for example – and it will be intriguing to see if this transfer comes to fruition.
