West Ham eye Jamaal Lascelles transfer as condition emerges for Newcastle United deal
Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles has emerged as a target for West Ham United in the winter transfer window.
The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract at St James’ Park, but is expected to leave in January.
Taty Catellanos and Pablo have already arrived at the London Stadium, and the Hammers are looking to strengthen their squad further.
Nuno Espirito Santo also has to deal with Lucas Paqueta’s situation, with the Brazil international looking to join Flamengo in the coming weeks.
Newcastle United to look for defender before Jamaal Lascelles sale to West Ham
Newcastle are looking for cover for their defensive crisis amid talks around Lascelles’ departure, according to the Daily Mail.
The news outlet reports in its print edition on 15 January that while the Hammers have their eyes on the English centre-back, Eddie Howe has some problems to deal with after injuries to the likes of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn.
Lascelles is one of the Magpies’ captains, but he’s been a backup defender over the last few years.
In the current campaign, the veteran centre-back has made just two appearances in the Premier League, and it remains to be seen whether the Irons will get a deal over the line for him at the London Stadium.
Chelsea defender Axel Disasi is also on Nuno’s radar, indicating the need for reinforcements at the back at the East London outfit.
Konstantinos Mavropanos recently picked up a knock, and while the Portuguese manager can call upon Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Igor Julio, it doesn’t look like they’re trusted to get the Hammers out of the relegation zone.
London Stadium faithful will want to see one player gone next summer
Kilman hasn’t lived up to expectations at the London Stadium after the Irons spent £40million on him in 2024.
The 28-year-old has been a big reason why West Ham are struggling this season, with the defence all over the place.
| Appearances | 18 |
| Clean sheets | 1 |
| Penalties committed | 2 |
| Total duels won per game | 3.8 (53%) |
| Possession lost per game | 5.3 |
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the former Wolves defender leave the East London outfit next summer, as fans are frustrated by his consistently poor displays.
The best thing for Kilman and the Hammers would be to cut their losses and go their separate ways, whether they stay in the Premier League or not.
