West Ham and Tottenham in pursuit of Monaco centre-back Maripan
West Ham are in the hunt to sign Monaco centre-back Guillermo Maripan in the final stages of the summer transfer window, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper reported via their print edition on August 27 [page 61] that Arsenal and Tottenham are also interested in the 27-year-old Chile international.
It is understood that after Monaco crashed out of the Champions League this week by losing to Shakhtar Donetsk in the play-offs, they are willing to consider offers of £17.5million for Maripan, who’s not played in any of the Ligue 1 club’s three league matches so far this season.
Another centre-back addition?
West Ham are widely reported to be closing in on a deal for Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma.
According to Sky Sports, the France international, 26, has undergone a medical with the Hammers ahead of a £25million move across London.
It will be interesting to see whether this last-ditch interest in Maripan is for David Moyes to either sign yet another centre-back or he was on their radar just in case the Zouma deal fell apart.
Maripan joined Monaco in 2019 but has since made just 57 appearances in all competitions for them.
Last season, the former Alaves centre-back started 22 Ligue 1 fixtures for the principality club as they finished third and qualified for the Champions League.
In his debut campaign in French football, Maripan played just 20 times in total in the league.
If he’s struggled to hold down a regular spot in Monaco’s starting line-up, we doubt he’d be anywhere near the top of Moyes’ pecking order if he joined the Irons.
Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna have been Moyes’ go-to centre-backs while the Scot will now also have Zouma and Issa Diop in the mix.
Unless one of them leaves, Maripan would be fifth in the pecking order so this deal seems like a massive no-go.
