Werder Bremen ready mass exodus as West Ham want Zetterer transfer now

West Ham are ready to step up their recruitment drive after a fairly tame transfer window so far.

The Hammers have signed Daniel Cummings on a free transfer from Celtic, while Jean-Clair Todibo turned his loan move into a permanent stay.

Elsewhere, Mohammed Kudus has his heart set on a move to Tottenham, although a deal is yet to be agreed for the winger.

Now, the Irons could be closing in on a move for Werder Bremen goalkeeper Michael Zetterer.

West Ham have Zetterer on London Stadium list

Lukasz Fabianski departed the London Stadium this summer and is currently without a club despite links with Charlton Athletic.

With Fabianski out the door, Graham Potter has Alphonse Areola and Wes Foderingham, meaning a new goalkeeper is needed this summer.

Areola endured a difficult season and made three errors leading to goals in 26 Premier League appearances.

As for Foderingham, he joined the Irons on a free transfer last summer, but is yet to make an appearance for the London club, simply ticking Premier League registration boxes.

Now, West Ham have Zetterer on their list of potential targets, according to BILD (9 July, page 32).

The German newspaper reports that Danish side FC Copenhagen, who could reach the Champions League, also have the 29-year-old in their sights.

BILD go on to state that no Werder Bremen player is not for sale as they want to generate a transfer surplus of just under £6.5million this summer.

Bremen are dependent on revenue and want to return to international business as soon as possible.

Potter needs Areola upgrade to succeed in Premier League

While Areola cannot solely be to blame for the Hammers’ mishaps last season, Potter needs better options.

Zetterer was a regular starter for the Bundesliga side during the 2024/25 campaign, making 34 appearances in green.

The German kept 10 clean sheets for Bremen, although he made four errors that led to goals.

Furthermore, the 29-year-old, like Areola, conceded more goals than was expected last season.

Of course, a player cannot solely be judged on statistics, but the signs are not exactly encouraging for Potter.

While West Ham need a new goalkeeper to challenge Areola, they must ensure they buy wisely.
