Trevor Sinclair with withering assessment of West Ham transfer target
Trevor Sinclair says Lucas Digne “can’t defend” and has warned his former side West Ham not to buy the Everton full-back.
The Hammers are reportedly in talks to sign the French international [Daily Mail] with starter Aaron Cresswell out with an injury, and Digne is available after his manager Rafael Benitez admitted he has asked to leave.
But Sinclair’s view is that the ex-Barcelona left-back is far from good enough to be worth an expensive move.
Speaking on talkSPORT (as quoted by The Liverpool Echo) the former England international said: “I’ve seen players from the cup competitions, from lower divisions, give him a horrendous time. He can’t defend one-on-one situations.
“I wouldn’t be overjoyed if West Ham sign him, but there’s a lot of big clubs interested.”
Sinclair would appear to be in the minority considering the amount of teams reported to have an interest in Digne, but with the very top sides mentioned not forthcoming with concrete offers perhaps they hold some of the same doubts.
The pundit’s doubts over the defensive side of the 28-year-old’s game, while accepting he has quality going forward, would perhaps have made him a better fit for Chelsea’s wing-back system.
But the European Champions do not seem to be near the front of the queue, as they already have a defensively-suspect incumbent in Marcos Alonso.
Digne is believed to be interested in playing in the Champions League but his options in that regard look to be dwindling.
But he has fallen out with Benitez, who has already replaced him with new signing Vitaliy Mykolenko, so he may have to reduce his expectations.
David Moyes would surely like cover at the left-back position but perhaps Everton’s want-away star is not the right fit.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers are reportedly looking to sign this Ligue 1 star.
