The two reasons Edson Alvarez wants to leave West Ham as midfielder set for £19m Fenerbache transfer
Edson Alvarez looks set to leave West Ham in a move to Fenerbahce.
Alvarez has agreed terms ahead of his West Ham exit after a largely difficult spell since moving to the London Stadium back in 2023.
There were initially high hopes for the Mexico international in East London, with former teammate Vladimir Coufal speaking highly of Alvarez after his switch from Ajax.
It now seems as if Graham Potter has reached the end of his patience with the defensive midfielder, as a move to the Super Lig looks set to go through.
With that being said, the 27-year-old is seemingly pushing for the move himself, as the reasons for a move to link up with Jose Mourinho and Alvarez have been explained.

Edson Alvarez wants to join Fenerbahce
There is no getting away from the fact that the Mexican has been a disappointing signing despite seemingly being a smart bit of business originally.
West Ham ultimately beat Borussia Dortmund to sign Alvarez, but he has never hit the heights of the Bundesliga giants in East London.
- Alvarez has featured just 13 times under Potter
- The defensive-minded midfielder was an unsued substitute against Sunderland
- Fenerbahce, Inter Milan and Ajax were still interest in him this summer
As a result, the opportunity for the Hammers to move the midfielder on is seemingly too good to turn down this summer.
It looks as if Alvarez sees the situation in the same way as Fabrizio Romano has reported (21 August) that the versatile midfielder wants to join Fenerbahce after considering other options.
The chance to play in European football was a reason behind the move for the Irons’ number four, while being wanted by Mourinho being a second key rationale to green light the Turkyie move.
This looks set to result in Alvarez forcing through an intial loan to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium with a £19million option of a permanent move included in the deal, according to Florian Plettenberg (21 August).
West Ham benefit most from £17m Edson Alvarez exit
As it stands, the Hammers’ midfield is in need of huge of revolution, especially after a dreadful start to the season against Sunderland.
With that being said, it is still positive to see Potter and Co. picking up potentially hugely positive fees for someone like Alvarez who has failed to impress in claret and blue.
Stat per 90 (2024/25) | Edson Alvarez |
Tackle win rate (%) | 54.0 |
Duel win rate (%) | 50.2 |
Possession won final third | 0.25 |
Chances created | 0.61 |
This could be the calalyst this summer to complete a deal for someone like Mateus Fernandes, or any other progressive midfield option.
There is a huge need for change in East London and moving on dead wood has to take priority, something which could hand the Irons a much needed boost.
