The crazy number of games Wilson has missed through injury as West Ham deal struck

West Ham look set to sign Callum Wilson on a free transfer after his recent Newcastle United exit.

Wilson has made a name for himself as a clinical goalscorer in the Premier League, with the veteran striker a key figure at former clubs Newcastle and Bournemouth.

The 33-year-old is said to have agreed on personal terms at the London Stadium, and it feels like a matter of time before he’s finally part of Graham Potter’s squad.

However, Hammers fans might have some reservations regarding Wilson, given his lengthy injury record.

Wilson’s lengthy injury record will be a huge concern

Wilson has reportedly been offered a pay-as-you-go contract by David Sullivan, and the Hammers are right to be cautious.

The former England international managed to play just 18 games for Newcastle last season, albeit that was also down to the form of Alexander Isak.

The 33-year-old has faced several injury issues over the last two years and scored just one goal in all competitions last season for Newcastle.

Wilson missed more than 29 games last season for the Geordies through injury, surpassing the 28 games he was injured for during the 2023/24 campaign.

Over the last five seasons, the striker has missed 677 days through injury, though his fine goalscoring form could win over supporters.

Wilson must be joined by more additions up front

Niklas Fullkrug was a mistake that Sullivan will be keen to avoid replicating this summer.

Wilson’s fine goalscoring form will be valuable for Potter’s side, though his injury record makes it inevitable that the Hammers will have to add more depth up front.
