talkSPORT broadcaster reacts with glee at Mavropanos transfer news at West Ham United

Tom Rennie says he will “be delighted” if West Ham United are able to effectively get a full refund on centre-back Konstantinos Mavropanos.

German outlet Kicker reported on Wednesday (21 August) that Stuttgart are interested in re-signing the defender before the transfer window shuts.

West Ham splashed out a reported £19million [The Guardian] to sign Mavropanos almost a year ago to the day, but his debut campaign at the London Stadium was underwhelming.

Reacting to the latest transfer speculation surrounding the Greece international, Rennie posted on X [21 August]: “If West Ham can get a full refund I’d be delighted with that.”

West Ham should cash in on Konstantinos Mavropanos

Even if they cannot recoup the full amount on Mavropanos, even taking a small hit of a couple of million may be worth in for United in the long term.

The Greek defender was not exactly disastrous last season, but nor did he impress all that often. Indeed, he can so often look look like an accident waiting to happen.

By selling Mavropanos, the Irons will ensure they stay within the confides of PSR, while also freeing up funds to bring in a cheaper alternative.

Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo will surely be the first-choice central-defensive pairing once fit. There are then other options waiting to fill in if needed.

What West Ham should not do, though, is simply sell Mavropanos if any old offer is tabled. He still has plenty of time to run on his contract and therefore a sale could be on further down the line.

For now, let’s see if Stuttgart are serious with their interest and, if so, how much they truly value the player they sold just 12 months ago.
