Southampton make bid as Flynn Downes transfer development emerges at West Ham United

Southampton have made a player-plus-cash bid for West Ham United midfielder Flynn Downes, according to Roshane Thomas.

Writing via the Athletic (28 June), Thomas reported that the Saints are in talks with the Hammers over a deal for the 25-year-old.

Southampton are offering Kyle Walker-Peters plus cash in exchange for Downes.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (28 June), Walker-Peters has already said yes to a move to the London Stadium.

Downes spent last season on loan with Southampton, and manager Russell Martin is keen to keep hold of him.

Will West Ham United accept Kyle Walker-Peters plus a cash fee for Flynn Downes?

This could be a deal which benefits all parties involved.

It is very rare that a transfer between two Premier League clubs makes so much sense, with everybody involved standing to gain from this proposed offer.

Downes would return to a club where he enjoyed such a positive loan spell but would be playing in the Premier League rather than in the Championship.

Southampton would sign a player who their manager wants, while West Ham would receive a player who their manager needs.

Walker-Peters is a right-back, a position which desperately needs upgrading at the London Stadium.

As for the player himself, he would be moving to a club which is likely to be fighting higher up the Premier League than the Saints.

Therefore this is a fantastic offer for the Hammers, and it is difficult to see a deal not getting done before the transfer window shuts.

Whether or not they are happy with these exact terms remains to be seen, but either way, it seems as if both clubs are pushing in the same direction.
