Southampton look at last-gasp Maxwel Cornet transfer in West Ham United news

Southampton are looking at a late move for West Ham United attacker Maxwel Cornet, according to The Telegraph.

The newspaper reported via its website that Russell Martin is looking to bolster his attacking options ahead of the August 30 deadline.

As the Ivory Coast international has another three years left on his deal at the London Stadium, loaning Cornet is one of the only options for the Hammers.

West Ham United should sanction the exit of Maxwel Cornet

Having already signed Flynn Downes from the Hammers at the start of the window, the Saints are looking to dip their feet into Julen Lopetegeui’s team once again.

Lopetegui’s side is now filled to the brim with attacking talent. Last term it was one of the weakest areas on the pitch but thanks to their summer of recruitment, they look to be in good shape.

The likes of Brazilian starlet Luis Guilherme and the Championship’s Player of the Season Crysencio Summerville [talkSPORT, 5 August, 12:26] have both already been added to the Hammers’ ranks which has pushed Cornet further down the pecking order.

Especially with Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus both staying at the London Stadium for the foreseeable future, it makes sense to loan out Cornet as he will be unlikely to get much game time this term.

And, if the loan move does work out and then next season one of Kudus or Bowen chooses to depart the club, Cornet could be a ready-made replacement that wouldn’t require the club to spend any money, which would leave the club with extra funding to improve elsewhere.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have made a £16.6million bid for Richard Rios.
