Report: West Ham aim to double Declan Rice’s wages with new contract
West Ham are preparing a new contract for midfielder Declan Rice and are ready to offer him a huge pay rise, according to the Daily Star.
The newspaper reports that Rice, 21, is currently earning £60,000-a-week on his deal at the London Stadium but amid interest from Chelsea, the Hammers are planning a new extended deal for the England international which will double his earnings to £120,000-a-week.
Rice’s existing terms expire in 2024 with an option to be extended by one year.
More interestingly, for West Ham fans, the Daily Star adds that if Rice signs this proposed new contract, it will effectively end Chelsea’s chances of signing him.
If that happens then you have to take your hat off the board and commend them for getting Rice tied down to a contract he deserves and for ending Chelsea’s hunt to sign him.
David Gold and David Sullivan get their fair share of deserved criticism but every now and then they have to be praised for something and this could be one of those rare moments.
Rice is a credit to West Ham.
He’s risen through the ranks of the club’s academy as a defender, turned himself into a midfielder and become a mainstay for both West Ham and England.
It would be a massive backwards step if the Hammers were to sell Rice but at least they’re making efforts to ensure that doesn’t happen any time soon.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are eyeing Reading defender Liam Moore.
