Maxwel Cornet red tape emerges at last minute in West Ham United transfer twist
Red tape has emerged around Maxwel Cornet’s last-minute loan move to Southampton from West Ham United, according to Jacob Steinberg.
The Guardian journalist reported via X on Friday (30 August) that some doubt has emerged over whether or not the winger will make the temporary switch to St Mary’s before the summer transfer window slams shut.
Julen Lopetegui’s side and the Saints had agreed terms on a season-long loan move for the 27-year-old on deadline day [Mark McAdam, 30 August], but it is understood that a deal sheet has been submitted to try and finalise the move [Sky Sports, 30 August].
Will Maxwel Cornet exit West Ham amid Southampton transfer rumours?
It had seemed nailed on that Cornet wouldn’t be a West Ham player when the transfer window closed this summer, but somehow it now seems as though he could be back at the London Stadium by the start of September.
Of course, things can change at the drop of the hat at this stage of the window so this deal could still be completed thanks to the deal sheet, but at the moment it does appear as though any potential transfer hangs in the balance.
In an ideal world, this deal should have been wrapped up way before deadline day. It was clear that Cornet didn’t have a role to play under Lopetegui this term and therefore he should have been sold or loaned out weeks ago.
Hopefully, the Hammers won’t live to regret this decision until the January transfer window opens. If they are lumbered with Cornet’s wages for the remainder of the season, they will have to question why they didn’t get a deal done.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers have reached an agreement in principle for one player to exit on loan this summer
