Maxwel Cornet exit update at West Ham United as Southampton eye last-gasp loan transfer

West Ham United winger Maxwel Cornet’s most obvious move before transfer deadline day is a loan switch to Southampton, according to Sean Whetstone.

Whetstone reported via the West Ham Football X account (29 August) that the Ivorian winger looks set to exit the London Stadium on a temporary basis before the transfer window slams shut on Friday 30 August.

The Irons Premier League rivals Wolves and Crystal Palace have also been credited with an interest in the Irons’ attacker’s signature who is yet to feature under Julen Lopetegui this season.

Will Maxwel Cornet exit West Ham amid Southampton transfer rumours?

Lopetegui has overseen a major squad reshuffle at West Ham this summer and as a result of several new additions, it is hard to see where Cornet now fits into the former Real Madrid manager’s plans in East London.

The Ivorian was already well down the pecking order under David Moyes last term, with Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and even Ben Johnson all preferred to him in the second half of the campaign.

Now that the Hammers have also added Crysencio Summville and Luis Guilherme to their ranks, it seems unlikely that Cornet will play any part under Lopetegui, especially after he was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup clash with Bournemouth.

If the Hammers are able to get his wage off of the bill for the next six months by loaning him to the Saints, it will be an excellent piece of business as it will free up some space for Lopetegui to make one or two last-minute additions.

Hopefully, Southampton and the Irons will manage to find a way to get this deal over the line before the window slams shut on Friday.
