Manchester United learn what’s needed to sign Edson Alvarez from West Ham United
Manchester United accept that trying to sign Edson Alvarez from West Ham United will be “very expensive”, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer expert shared via X on Wednesday evening (19 June) that Man United are discussing a move for Alvarez should Casemiro leave.
In a further update via his Daily Briefing page on Thursday (20 June), Romano added that those high up at Old Trafford are big fans of Alvarez.
However, Romano reiterated Man United know any deal will be “difficult” as West Ham do not intend to sell the Mexico international this summer.
The Red Devils have therefore learned it will take a lot of money if they are to capture the 26-year-old before the transfer window closes.
Manchester United eye Edson Alvarez transfer
This news has seemingly come out of nowhere, but it is no great surprise that the Red Devils would be interested in Alvarez.
While there were times last season he was off it, the Mexican has proved to be a good signing for the Irons since arriving from Ajax.
Erik ten Hag knows Alvarez from their time together with the Dutch heavyweights, so the Man United boss certainly needs no convincing.
Given the length of Alvarez’s contract, though, there is absolutely no reason for West Ham to even consider cashing in this summer.
Money speaks, of course, and a mammoth bid would make David Sullivan think twice, but Man United do not have lots of money right now.
If United had been more proactive, they could have landed Alvarez from Ajax 12 months ago. Instead, West Ham took a punt and it has paid off.
In other West Ham news, documents are said to have now been signed for the Irons’ latest summer arrival.
