Manchester United demand more than £40million for Harry Maguire after West Ham United offer

West Ham are unwilling to negotiate with Manchester United who have indicated that Harry Maguire will only leave if they receive an offer north of £40million, according to Samuel Luckhurst in the Manchester Evening News.

Luckhurst wrote in the Manchester-based publication that West Ham’s initial bid of £20million had been predictably turned down, but indicated Maguire would be the most likely defender to leave Manchester United this summer, but only if the initial bid is more than doubled.

Any hopes of securing the England international’s signature appear to have been dashed for the Hammers, with the two clubs miles apart in their valuation, and they aren’t expected to up their £20million offer.

United need to make their minds up

Ultimately, the question is: is Maguire a part of Erik ten Hag’s plans or not? It has been indicated throughout the summer that the Red Devils will entertain offers for the defender, but they continue to set an unrealistic price tag that clubs are evidently unwilling to pay.

The England regular was stripped of his captaincy at Old Trafford a couple of weeks ago, as the club continue to display their stance surrounding his future.

If United want Maguire out this summer, they’ll have to lower their price. In what has become a seller’s market, as displayed by Chelsea’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo, Manchester United find themselves in a difficult position where West Ham hold the cards.

United won’t drop the price? West Ham will move on to other targets. But if they do lower his price? They’re heavily cutting their losses on what was an £80million investment just three years ago.

Maguire’s summer will largely depend on how much United want rid of him, as there don’t appear to be clubs lining up in desperation to sign him unless the fee suits the buying clubs first and foremost.

In other West Ham news, the door has been opened for West Ham to move for a German international defender.
