Kalvin Phillips expected to make West Ham United debut on deadline day as new £40m twist emerges
Kalvin Phillips is expected to make his West Ham debut against Bournemouth on deadline day (1 February), according to Florian Plettenberg.
The Sky Sports Germany journalist tweeted on Thursday (25 January) that the England international is set to undergo his medical at Rush Green on Thursday ahead of his loan move from Manchester City.
He added that the deal will include an option-to-buy clause worth £40million in the summer if the Hammers want to make the 28-year-old midfielder’s switch to the London Stadium permanent.
Almost there
It looks like the deal to take Phillips to West Ham is almost there provided there are no problems that come up when he undergoes his medical.
Despite his lack of fitness after his opportunities have been limited at Man City over the past two years, there shouldn’t be any problems in that regard.
There is no desperate rush to push the deal through as the Hammers have the weekend off, but it looks as though his debut will be against Bournemouth, where he is sure to receive an excellent reception.
There had been reports that the option to buy would be about £35million, but the Irons look to have agreed to pay up to £40million if they want to make him their player in the summer.
It’s baffling how the Citizens can make a profit on the £42million they paid to sign him from Leeds United in 2022, with the loan fee believed to be up to £6million including his wages.
But the most important thing is that Phillips is on the verge of signing for us and that will provide us with a boost heading into the second half of the season.
