Journalist brands West Ham a ‘Disgrace’ after reported Josh Doig approach to Hibernian

A Scottish journalist has hit out at West Ham and Arsenal after their reported approach for Hibernian’s 19-year-old left-back Josh Doig.

The Evening Standard claimed on Thursday [22/07/21] that the Premier League clubs had asked the Scottish side to drop their asking price of £5million plus add-ons for the teenager.

West Ham and Arsenal only want to pay around £2.5million if they are to follow up on their interest.

However, writing on his verified Twitter profile, Herald and Times journalist Hendry hit out at the sums mentioned.

He said: “If reports from today are true, it’s an absolute disgrace that Arsenal and West Ham have urged Hibs to half their asking price for Josh Doig. When tens of millions are spent on duds because they play down south, it’s dreadful to make Hibs pay for bringing through a top talent.”

On the cheap

On the one hand, Doig is considered one of Scotland’s brightest emerging talents. His energetic displays down the Hibs left-hand side earned him a place in the Scottish Premiership Team of the Season, ahead of Croatian international Borna Barisic [Rangers].

With the success of Scottish left-backs Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney in recent years, both of whom have impressed at Liverpool and Arsenal respectively, it’s no wonder that Doig’s club is setting their demands out as so.

But it was only Doig’s first full season in senior football, and thus there is likely to be reticence on behalf of potential buyers who don’t want to risk a ‘big’ fee on someone who could be a ‘one-season wonder’.

West Ham have shown an unwillingness to be held over a barrel in recent times, though, and may walk away if Hibs continue to hold up their £5milllion asking price.
