Jonathan Tah leading target for West Ham United with ‘shock’ January transfer twist on the cards

West Ham want to sign Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen if they allow Nayef Aguerd to leave in a “shock” transfer this month, according to the Evening Standard.

Writing on their website (5 January), the news outlet report that the Hammers are open to letting the Morocco international leave permanently this month if a good offer is received.

Should that happen they will look to replace him with a senior option, with Germany international Tah tipped as the leading target for David Moyes.

“West Ham open to shock Nayef Aguerd sale as David Moyes hunts top replacement,” they wrote.

“Jonathan Tah among the Hammers’ key targets with potential defensive changes imminent.

“Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah remains a leading target, but the German club are reluctant to sell this month as they sit top of the Bundesliga under Xabi Alonso.”

Upgrade

Nayef Aguerd joined the club in the summer of 2022 and made a great impact in his first season at the club, forging a great partnership with Kurt Zouma at the back.

But mistakes have begun to creep into his game more in recent months this season, with transfer interest from Saudi Arabia seemingly turning his head from the summer.

Now they’re back in January and West Ham would be smart to cash in, recoup the money they spent at the very least and then bring in an upgrade who actually wants to be here.

It would be quite a shock considering how well he did when he first came into the club and how adamant we were about keeping him in the summer, but things change quickly in football.

Tim Steidten knows Tah well and would be able to get a deal done quickly ideally, so this is something to definitely keep an eye on over the coming weeks.
