Jeff Stelling makes West Ham United point as Andy Carroll transfer update emerges

Jeff Stelling has slammed Mail Sport after they described former West Ham United favourite Andy Carroll as a “journeyman” after new transfer developments.

The former England international is set to join the French fourth-tier side Girondins de Bordeaux after the club went into administration and was punished with a double relegation in August [L’Equipe, 17 September].

After Mail Sport (17 September) was quick to suggest this was the eighth move of Carroll’s “journeyman career”, talkSPORT host Stelling has hit back listing the Irons as one of the many big clubs he has played for.

Writing on X on Tuesday (17 September) he said: “England, Liverpool, Newcastle, West Ham – that’s some ‘journeyman’ career!!”

Where is former West Ham favourite Andy Carroll playing now after West Ham exit?

Carroll is a player that time hasn’t been particularly kind to as most supporters remember his injuries during his time in East London and his poor spell at Liverpool rather than his high points at Newcastle United.

Although the England international did struggle with his fitness while he was playing in claret and blue, he was one of the Hammers’ more consistent forwards when available and outshone several other strikers.

Even the most optimistic of Irons supporters would admit that Carroll was far from perfect, but compared to the likes of Gianluca Scamacca and Simone Zaza he looks like the second coming of Ronaldo.

Hopefully, Niclas Fullkrug will be the man to finally break the Hammers’ striker curse this season. The German international’s career hasn’t been too dissimilar to that of Carroll, but nobody would suggest he was a journeyman.

Although West Ham supporters are yet to see the best of the 31-year-old in an Irons shirt because of injuries at the start of the season, the initial signs suggest he could be an excellent addition to Julen Lopetegui’s side.
