Jacob Steinberg says 'nothing close' on Duje Caleta-Car move to West Ham, shares reason
There is “nothing close” on Duje Caleta-Car’s West Ham move, as a stalemate on the type of deal has developed with Marseille, reports Jacob Steinberg.
Foot Mercato was reporting that it was “very serious” between the two clubs, with West Ham planning to double the defenders salary in a deal worth over €25million including bonuses.
But The Guardian journalist suggests this is wide of the mark, with the difference between a permanent deal, and a loan with an option to buy, the sticking point.
Writing on his personal Twitter account Steinberg said: “West Ham position on Duje Caleta-Car unchanged – they want a loan with an option to buy, Marseille want a permanent sale this month. Negotiations over the defender ongoing.”
He then went added: “Nothing close on this despite reports in France claiming he was about to sign.”
It will not be the end of the world if the Hammers come out of this window without adding to the squad since, this is a group of players who have done well enough so far to keep themselves well in contention to qualify for the Champions League.
But the team’s form has been inconsistent all season, and two defeats on the bounce going into the Premier League winter break has seen Manchester United overtake David Moyes’ men into fourth position.
If games in hand are taken into account The Irons are currently at risk of dropping out of the European places entirely, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves all having played more the one game fewer.
So it is an increasingly frustrating situation at the London Stadium for the club to still be without a senior signing this window.
Moyes is believed to be eager to add to his squad, putting a forward and a defender on the shopping list, as injuries in the back line and no back up to Michail Antonio up front remain issues.
Time is running out for deals to get over the line, and with this one at an advanced stage the club looks like they are going to have to decide if they want him now or not at all.
In other West Ham news, this mooted last-minute swoop has reportedly been dashed.
