How West Ham have Reiss Nelson loan hope as Arsenal clause emerges

West Ham have been looking into the prospect of loaning Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson.

The Hammers are looking to build a squad capable of promotion to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Nelson would be a risk by West Ham, but the Englishman has shown plenty of promise in the past.

And a loan deal would limit the risk involved and help add to the numbers in Nuno Espirito Santo's squad.

There were some concerns over whether that loan would be possible, with Nelson in his final year at the Emirates.

But now details of an Arsenal clause have emerged as talks continue over that prospect.

What Reiss Nelson clause can Arsenal activate?

West Ham will be looking to get deals over the line before their first Championship game of the season.

Nuno started off the competitive season strongly by progressing to the second round of the Carabao Cup versus Portsmouth.

Now, attention has turned back to the market with a loan move for Nelson proposed.

According to the Evening Standard, Arsenal can activate an option to extend Nelson's contract by 12 months should he move out on loan.

That means a temporary switch would not harm the chances the Gunners have of landing a fee for the out-of-favour forward.

For West Ham, that could increase their chances of landing that loan deal, although it has been said the Premier League champions prefer a permanent exit.

Additionally, it has also been shared that it is unknown just how Nelson feels about the prospect of a move to London Stadium, with personal terms still yet to be discussed.

However, Arsenal are keen to see Nelson join the Hammers and have encouraged the E20 side during discussions.

Why West Ham should stick to loan deal for Nelson

Nelson has barely played football over the last few seasons, but his wages are another sticking point.

In a loan deal, the Irons would likely be covering his salary, so adding a transfer fee on top of that does not make much sense giving how much he earns.

According to Capology, Nelson is on a whopping £100,000 per week, far from the ideal wages for a Championship side.

Taking him on a permanent basis without a significant reduction in wages would not be a smart move for the Irons, who could use those funds elsewhere in the squad.
