Guido Rodriguez spoiled for choice as new West Ham exit destination emerges
Guido Rodriguez appears to be inching closer to a West Ham United transfer exit.
Rodriguez joined West Ham on a free transfer after leaving Real Betis in the summer of 2024.
At the time, this seemed like a good deal for all parties as the Argentina international was a coveted individual.
What has since transpired does not make for pleasant reading, though, with Rodriguez proving to be one of West Ham’s worst recent recruits.
West Ham were reportedly considering cancelling Rodriguez’s contract last year but decided against that move due to a lack of midfield depth.
With his contract set to expire this summer, Juventus have been linked with a January move for Rodriguez but it seems a move elsewhere is more likely.
MLS move on the cards for Guido Rodriguez as La Liga switch breaks down
Late last year, Rodriguez was credited with interest from River Plate but that move has not come to pass.
Moreover, Club America emerged as a potential destination for Rodriguez, but now talk of a move to Major League Soccer has emerged.
According to TyC Sports journalist, German Garcia Grova via X on Wednesday, MLS outfit Atlanta United have made a formal offer to sign the 31-year-old.
He adds that while there was interest from Valencia, ‘financial differences’ arose between Rodriguez and the Spanish side, prompting the American club to press forward in their pursuit.
While Rodriguez’s contract at London Stadium is set to expire in the summer, there is an option to extend that by another year.
That could boost West Ham’s chances of getting a bigger fee for him in January or even in the summer.
However, it seems unlikely that that will happen, with Rodriguez having the option to sign a pre-contract agreement with a club this month before joining for free at the end of the season.
West Ham would, ideally, like to get him off their books in January but it remains to be seen whether that will happen.
West Ham’s poor transfer track record continues
When West Ham won the Europa Conference League in 2023, few would have predicted their current plight.
Under David Moyes, they were challenging for Europe and had lifted a European trophy but the style of play irked West Ham fans.
Now, the club’s board are public enemy number one, something that has been exacerbated by some poor signings in recent years, as they veer towards Premier League relegation.
| West Ham’s top five worst signings since Conference League win | Transfer fee |
| Max Kilman from Wolves | £40million |
| Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund | £27m |
| Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City | Loan |
| Mads Hermansen from Leicester City | £18m |
| Guido Rodriguez | Free transfer |
Kalvin Phillips proved to be an awful loan signing from Manchester City in 2024, as the former Leeds United man clashed with fans, scored an own goal and got sent off in a wretched stint.
Centre-back Max Kilman has turned out to be a £40million flop since arriving from Wolves on a seven-year deal in the summer of 2024, as has £18m goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
And, arguably, Rodriguez will be up there as one of West Ham’s most regrettable signings. It would probably be best for him and West Ham if there is a parting of the ways this month.
