Footage emerges of what Southampton fans sang about West Ham United loanee Flynn Downes
West Ham midfielder Flynn Downes took part in the celebrations after achieving Premier League promotion on loan at Southampton.
Daily Echo reporter George Rees-Julian posted a video on X as the Southampton fans sang “sign him up” towards Downes, who has excelled during his temporary spell at St. Mary’s this season.
Captain Jack Stephens even joined in on the chants as Downes lifted the play-off trophy aloft, however, there is no clause in the midfielder’s loan deal for him to be signed permanently from the Hammers.
After the chants died down, the club’s presenter outside St. Mary’s gave a defiant message into the microphone: “If West Ham don’t want him? We’ll have him.”
Will West Ham sell Flynn Downes?
The Irons would surely be happy to sell their 25-year-old midfielder on to Southampton, but as things stand, he’ll return to the London Stadium for pre-season training under Julen Lopetegui.
Regardless of how well he and the Southampton faithful have warmed to one another, the main objective of Downes’ loan was to play his way back into Hammers contention, and with a new head coach to impress, he may fancy his chances of making an impression this summer.
Midfield is an area in which the Londoners have plenty of depth – hence they were able to send Downes out on loan – but a potential FA misconduct charge for Lucas Paqueta could create a vacancy in this area of the pitch for Downes to occupy.
Promotion will bring Premier League riches aplenty to Southampton, making them more than capable of buying Downes this summer, but if the midfielder is dead-set on making a career of his time at the London Stadium, he may be keen to see the summer through at West Ham.
