Fabrizio Romano shares Steven Bergwijn transfer update as West Ham United consider summer switch

Ajax star Steven Bergwijn has already been the subject of calls ahead of the transfer window having been a target for West Ham United, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist reported in his Daily Briefing (14 May) that the Dutch winger has a concrete chance of leaving this summer but no negotiations have been held between clubs yet.

West Ham were keen on securing the former Tottenham winger in January, and while it remains to be seen if they will reignite their interest, Romano has refused to rule out Julen Lopetegui pushing for Bergjwin.

Writing in his Daily Briefing column, he said: “Steven Bergwijn could leave Ajax this summer due to their financial situation. There are concrete chances of Bergwijn leaving for around £20m, but there are no negotiations just yet.

“West Ham previously showed an interest in Bergwijn, but apart from that I can’t name interested clubs yet.

“Bergwijn is appreciated in the Premier League – he is on the list of several clubs there, and there have been some calls to be informed on his situation, but let’s see if West Ham decide to try again for him under Julen Lopetegui.”

Will West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui push to sign Steven Bergwijn?

This summer could potentially be one of immense transition at the London Stadium. Lopetegui has already begun transfer talks with the Hammers and the Spaniard will want to put his own stamp on the squad.

While it remains to be seen where and how the former Real Madrid boss will invest, it is clear that he needs to strengthen outwide as there has been a reliance on Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen this term.

Bergwijn has experience in England following his spell with Spurs and while he hasn’t necessarily set the league alight before, he could provide some genuine quality and depth ahead of the start of next season.

Tim Steidten will almost certainly already be working to prepare a list of targets ahead of the summer transfer window and you would imagine Bergwijn’s potential availability at a cut price will entice the Irons chief.
