Everything we know as West Ham start contract talks with Mohamadou Kante
West Ham United are making moves to tie down the future of Mohamadou Kante.
The midfield ace is developing into a key performer for the Hammers, playing 541 minutes of Championship football this season.
In six league starts, the 21-year-old has contributed three goals and one assist, and is growing in stature for West Ham.
Kante was signed by West Ham in the summer of 2024, but remained on loan with Paris FC.
Last season, he made 11 Premier League appearances as the Irons were relegated to the second tier.
This term, Kante is making a big impression for the high-flying Hammers, who are now making moves to tie down his long-term future.
Why West Ham are opening talks with Mohamadou Kante
Kante penned a five-year contract with the Hammers when he signed on back in 2024.
Consequently, he still has three years left to run on his current deal, meaning in theory there is no real rush to tie him down to fresh terms.
However, it was reported last month that West Ham were planning to offer Kante a new lucrative contract as a reward for his form.
Now, Roshane Thomas has reported for the Athletic that West Ham have started talks over a new contract, albeit they are in the early stages of negotiations.
He added that sources speaking under conditions of anonymity stated it is reward for his form and standing in the squad.
Moreover, West Ham are looking to ward off potential suitors in Kante by offering him fresh terms.
West Ham making a smart move with Mohamadou Kante
Kante may have plenty of time left on his deal at the London Stadium.
But if teams from the Premier League start showing interest, then it would be a difficult situation for West Ham.
So, it makes complete sense to get him tied down to fresh terms that better reflect his place in the squad.
Kante deserves a new deal as well, he has already chipped in with some important moments for West Ham this season.
He could be a really important figure in helping the Hammers in their attempt to escape the Championship at the first attempt.
