Edson Alvarez agents agree £148,000-a-week contract at West Ham United as bid submitted

West Ham have agreed personal terms with midfielder Edson Alvarez ahead of his proposed move from Ajax, according to The Mail on Sunday.

On page 99 of the newspaper’s print edition on 6 August, it reported that the Mexican international’s agents have agreed a five-year contract worth £148,000-a-week to take him to the London Stadium.

It added that the Hammers have made an opening bid of £25million for the 25-year-old, with the Dutch side looking for a fee in the region of £35million but likely to accept about £30million.

Don’t play games

The fact West Ham have agreed terms with Alvarez is a positive step, but most of the players they have gone after this summer have wanted to join – it’s dealing with other clubs that has been the problem.

It’s not the time to continue playing games by offering well below the asking price, as it’s clearly not going to be accepted and we need players in as soon as possible.

So what if we end up paying £5million more? We have plenty of cash in the bank and it’s important that we have another midfielder in place ahead of the start of the season next week.

Out of all the players the Irons have been linked with this summer, the Mexican is probably the most ideal replacement for Declan Rice due to him being more defensive-minded and happy to sit in front of the defence and do the simple parts of the game.

He has been an instrumental figure for Ajax since signing from Mexican club America in 2019 after making 147 appearances, where he has scored 13 goals and laid on six assists [Transfermarkt].

It’s by no means done yet, but Alvarez’s move looks to be edging closer and we should, hopefully, be able to get this one over the line soon.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are in pole position to sign a “monster” from a CL club.
