Dharmesh Sheth drops update on Southampton talks to re-sign West Ham United ace Flynn Downes
West Ham United and Southampton remain in discussions surrounding Flynn Downes, according to Dharmesh Sheth.
The reporter said via Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre [9 July] that the two clubs are continuing talks over a permanent switch to St. Mary’s and Downes is open to the move.
However, no fee or structure to a deal has been agreed thus far and the midfielder, who spent last season on a successful loan with Saints, is with Julen Lopetegui and the squad at a pre-season camp in Austria.
West Ham and Southampton in talks over Downes departure
West Ham United will be keen to receive a strong fee for a player who won promotion with Southampton last term and would clearly be a good fit for the club in the Premier League.
Southampton were initially looking to offer Kyle Walker-Peters as part of the deal, knowing the Irons’ interest in a new right-back, although these two moves could also happen independently.
Downes is currently back with his teammates at his boyhood club and is currently undergoing business as usual in pre-season, though it’s unsurprising the midfield anchor wants to return to the South Coast, where he flourished.

The new contract recently signed by Saints boss Russell Martin will reinforce Downes’ mindset, having performed excellently in the club’s promotion campaign.
Former Hammer Frank McAvennie believes the club should look to keep the 25-year-old in East London instead of aiming for unproven players in the Premier League in his position, as developments continue.
