Dharmesh Sheth: Alphonse Areola to jet into London in next 24 hours to complete West Ham United signing
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is expected to jet into London in the “next 24 hours” to sign a permanent deal with West Ham, according to Dharmesh Sheth.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning (26 June), the Sky Sports News journalist reported that Areola, 29, has agreed to sign a five-year contract with the Hammers after spending the 2021/22 season on loan in East London.
It is understood that an official announcement is imminent with the Hammers set to pay £11million for the three-times France international.
We’re always a fan of loan-to-buy deals because it allows clubs to have a really good look at players before splashing the cash on them.
And while Areola spent most of last season sat on the bench, David Moyes will have had a really good look at him at Rush Green and will surely see him as a number one from now on.
Lukasz Fabianski will still be at the London Stadium next season but you get the feel that Areola wouldn’t have joined permanently unless he knew he was going to be the new number one.
He played 17 times in all competitions in the 2021/22 season.
The ex-Fulham loanee played in all but one of West Ham’s Europa League games and all of their domestic cup fixtures, plus one appearance in the Premier League when we lost 1-0 away at Manchester United in January.
Areola’s pretty much at the peak of his career now.
He’s a World Cup winner, a multiple Ligue 1 winner and has plenty of Premier League experience from his past loan spell at Fulham.
We’re very happy to see this deal getting done as it future-proofs an area of the squad that really needed that kind of treatment.
