David Sullivan ‘yet to learn his lesson’ after £30m Gomez news at West Ham

West Ham United are teetering dangerously close to making a huge transfer error this summer.

The Hammers need to recruit well this summer, and make no mistake about it, they will be afforded no margin of error in doing so when taking into account the struggles they demonstrated in the Premier League next season.

Albeit via the Conference League, West Ham were European champions a few seasons ago, and yet spent the majority of last season staring down the barrel of a possible relegation.

A failure to bring in the right profile of player this summer will be detrimental to their chances of progressing, and the latest update on Joe Gomez will spark some major concern at the London Stadium.

West Ham want to sign Liverpool’s Gomez this summer

First and foremost, for West Ham, the signing of a striker will be their number one priority, especially with Evan Ferguson returning to Brighton, though Graham Potter will look to take advantage of any opportunity that emerges when it comes to strengthening his squad.

To put it straight, there isn’t an area in which the Irons cannot strengthen, and have since been linked with a move for Gomez [The Guardian, 19 June].

Liverpool are prepared to sanction his exit for around £30million this summer, but if West Ham pursue a deal, it is evident that they haven’t learned from past lessons.

Gomez’s injury record is a tough sight to behold, and that has been the case for far too many incomings over the last few seasons.

If Sullivan goes ahead with this deal, at what is a relatively large cost, it will inevitably come back to haunt the Irons.

Potter needs to be backed in the market

Recruitment is often difficult, but it is also crucial to any side’s chances of success in the season that follows it.

After such a poor season across all competitions, it is evident that West Ham need reinforcements, and the longer the wait goes on, the harder it gets to recruit the right profile.
