Crysencio Summerville transfer update as Tim Steidten role emerges at West Ham United

Tim Steidten picked all of West Ham United’s summer signings other than Crysencio Summerville, according to Sean Whetstone.

Whetstone reported via the West Ham Football X account on Tuesday (24 September) that the Irons chief was responsible for choosing all of the additions to Julen Lopetegui’s side, barring the Dutch attacker.

The Hammers were incredibly busy in their first summer transfer window under the former Real Madrid boss as they signed nine first-team players and spent a reported £122million [Sean Whetstone, 8 September].

Summerville’s move from Elland Road was completed midway through the window and reportedly cost the Irons upwards of £25million [BBC Sport, 3 August].

How much did West Ham pay Leeds United for Crysencio Summerville transfer?

Lopetegui’s decision to substitute Summerville early on in the Hammers’ defeat to Chelsea led some fans to suggest there could be a rift between the player and the manager.

Although this latest update doesn’t completely dismiss that theory, the fact that it wasn’t Steidten who pushed to secure the Dutch winger would suggest that the manager was keen to bring him to East London instead.

Summerville has had a slower-than-expected start to the season, as have West Ham as a whole, but it is clear from his early performances in claret and blue and his displays with Leeds United last term that there is a player in there.

Given time to adapt to the Premier League, the Hammers may well have secured themselves a bargain transfer. Like Lopetegui himself, however, it would have been naive to expect immediate results from a player who has barely played in the top flight.

Hopefully, Lopetegui will find a way to get the best out of the former Leeds man in the coming weeks, without limiting the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen in an attacking sense.

After his early exit against Liverpool, the Dutchman is more than deserving of a Carabao Cup start against Liverpool.
