Charlie Cresswell to West Ham transfer latest as Nuno sinks to new lows
Nuno Espirito Santo is having a torrid time at West Ham United.
After winning just two of his first 15 matches in charge of the Hammers, Nuno is under huge scrutiny, and he desperately needs new signings if he wants to be successful in East London.
West Ham are now favourites to be relegated as they sit four points adrift of 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, who they play at the London Stadium on Tuesday.
Although Pablo and Taty Castellanos will be welcome additions in attack, the Hammers need to invest in players at the other end of the pitch.
West Ham’s 3-0 loss to Wolves exposed how defensively fragile Nuno’s side is, and unfortunately for the fans, no progress has been made in any deal to sign Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell.
West Ham haven’t begun talks to sign Charlie Cresswell
West Ham made a loan offer for Cresswell in the summer transfer window, which was swiftly rejected.
Reports had emerged that the Hammers were back in for the 23-year-old defender as they look to add quality to their back line.
However, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has reported that West Ham haven’t opened any talks with Toulouse over a move for Cresswell, despite keeping a close eye on him.
He is under contract with the French outfit until 2028, and the likelihood that he will make the move to West Ham hasn’t increased at all.
The 23-year-old has made 48 Ligue 1 appearances since departing England in 2024, having been unable to break through at Leeds after coming through their academy.
Although he hasn’t got any Premier League pedigree yet, Cresswell has an abundance of potential and could be exactly what Nuno needs to begin changing his defence.
David Sullivan can’t afford to let Nuno down with Cresswell
Sullivan has been under pressure for the majority of his reign as West Ham chairman, but the stakes have never been higher this season.
The Hammers are in dire need of top-quality recruitment, and they have had problems at centre-back for the last two seasons.
From a defensive standpoint, they have been a complete mess under Nuno, and after Saturday’s defeat, no other team has conceded more goals in the Premier League.
| Team | Goals conceded |
| West Ahm | 41 |
| Wolves | 40 |
| Burnley | 39 |
| Bournemouth | 38 |
Cresswell would likely command a fee in the region of around £15-20million, which for a 23-year-old English centre-back represents good value for money.
Sullivan has to be prepared to back Nuno in the January transfer window, and while the Portuguese manager needs to improve drastically, the signing of Cresswell could allow him to do so.
With the Toulouse star commanding interest from across Europe, West Ham must begin talks to secure his services quickly.
