Celtic want Andy Irving transfer before deadline as West Ham make decision

Celtic want to sign West Ham United midfielder Andy Irving on loan before the transfer deadline, according to Anthony Joseph.

The Sky Sports journalist reported via X (30 August) that despite The Bhoys’ interest, the Hammers aren’t “keen” on letting the midfielder go.

This comes after multiple approaches had been made for the Scotsman earlier in the window [Edinburgh Evening News, 16 August].

West Ham United should let Andy Irving exit

Of all the areas in Julen Lopetegui’s squad, one area of the pitch which seems fairly solid is that of their defensive midfielders.

The Hammers not only have the likes of Edson Alvarez and former Real Betis ace Guido Rodriguez among their ranks but they also have starlet Lewis Orford who could find his way into the first-team this season.

Granted, with James Ward-Prowse now edging closer to a London Stadium exit [Sky Sports News, 30 August, 14:51], there could be an argument made for Irving to stay at the club.

However, it feels as if due to the depth they have, especially when Tomas Soucek can also be deployed in defensive midfield, that the Scotsman wouldn’t get as much game time as he’d likely desire this term.

Irving is just 24 years old and has a bright future ahead of him but if he doesn’t get the correct amount of game time, his development could stagnate which would make him no use to West Ham.

A move to Celtic would make a lot of sense, especially since Matt O’Reilly has now exited.
