Callum Wilson contract update emerges as West Ham agree deal

West Ham are understood to be on the cusp of signing Callum Wilson, who left Newcastle at the end of June.

The 33-year-old is available on a free transfer and appears set to seal his move to the London Stadium.

Graham Potter has wanted a striker through the door this summer and the England international appears to be the one who’s joining.

Wilson set to sign one-year contract with the Hammers

According to David Ornstein via X (2 August), the former Newcastle forward will be signing a one-year deal with the Hammers.

West Ham are set to sign Wilson as he’s already completed his medical and the deal is now subject to an official announcement.

The salary is also understood to be heavily incentive-based, which means it could hinge on appearances and goals scored.

The London club will not be paying a transfer fee so in terms of that, it is a low-risk acquisition.

West Ham fans unlikely to be overly pleased with Wilson transfer

West Ham fans are unlikely to welcome Wilson’s signing, despite his free transfer and the club’s need for a reliable striker, due to several concerns.

At 33, Wilson’s age and extensive injury history clash with manager Potter’s aim to lower the squad’s average age and prioritise youth.

His injury-prone record, including hamstring and back issues, raises doubts about his ability to stay fit and score consistently, especially as he failed to score in 18 Premier League games last season.

Furthermore, his signing seems to be driven by David Sullivan and agent Will Salthouse and feels misaligned with Potter’s strategy, reinforcing perceptions of a flawed transfer policy.

Despite Wilson’s proven Premier League pedigree, fans fear he represents a short-term, risky move rather than a long-term solution, fueling frustration.

Hopefully, Potter puts his foot down and demands a top quality striker before the window ends as it’s imperative they bring in someone through the door.
