Burnley stance emerges on Josh Brownhill contract situation as West Ham United eye free transfer

West Ham United want to sign Josh Brownhill on a free transfer from Burnley next summer, but the Clarets have other plans according to talkSPORT.

Writing on their website (14 November), the news outlet report that the Hammers and Wolves are interested in signing the 27-year-old on a free when his contract expires in June 2024.

But Burnley are preparing to activate a clause in his contract that would add an extra year to his deal, meaning West Ham would have to pay up if they want to sign him anyway.

“Burnley are set to activate the extra year’s option in Josh Brownhill’s contract to ward off interest from a host of Premier League rivals,” they wrote.

“West Ham and Wolves are among the clubs monitoring Brownhill’s situation, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2024.”

Depth

Central midfield is a position where West Ham are a little bit light at the moment and any injuries would leave us in a bit of trouble.

So it makes sense that David Moyes and the board would be looking at options to come in and fill that gap in the squad, with the belief being that Flynn Downes probably isn’t going to make it here long term.

Currently Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, Lucas Paqueta and Tomas Soucek are the options but Moyes likes to use them all at the same time.

Bringing in a player like Brownhill who fits the style the manager likes, but also adds to our homegrown quota and would be free would make a lot of sense considering what we want to do going forward.

Unfortunately Burnley are going to make it more difficult, but it’s still something to pay attention to in the coming months with them likely to battle against relegation which could make any deal a bit more doable even with a fee involved.

In other West Ham news, long-term Moyes target could be allowed to leave in January on one condition.
