Andy Irving makes West Ham United exit decision amid last-minute transfer interest
Andy Irving is not expected to leave West Ham United before the transfer window slams shut, according to Roshane Thomas.
The Athletic journalist reported via X on Friday (30 August) that the midfielder wants to fight for his place under Julen Lopetegui at the London Stadium having spent last season on loan with SK Austria Klagenfurt.
Irving has garnered plenty of attention ahead of the 30 August deadline, with reports suggesting Celtic are one of the sides interested in securing the Scotsman’s signature on loan in the final hours of the transfer window [Anthony Joseph, 30 August].
Will Andy Irving exit West Ham amid Celtic transfer rumours?
Irving may have been a West Ham player for a while now, but he is still yet to make his competitive Hammers debut and for a while this summer it has seemed as though he was set to exit without ever playing in claret and blue.
But the 24-year-old seems desperate to get his career up and running in a Hammers shirt. Some will question why he hasn’t completed another loan switch, but he obviously believes that he is ready to play regularly for Lopetegui.
The Scotsman has been on the bench for two of the Irons’ first three games of the campaign and while he is yet to take to the field, it seems as though he has earned more than a little faith from Lopetegui already.
His ambition and willingness to fight for his place have to be admired as well. So many players would just jump ship if it meant they got to play week in and week out, but Irving is keen to do things the hard way at West Ham.
It will be interesting to see whether or not he can book his place in the starting XI with no European football on offer in East London this season. It won’t be easy for the midfielder, but nothing can be totally ruled out.
