Agent of Igor Gomes confirms West Ham loan bid

The agent of Sao Paulo midfielder Igor Gomes has confirmed West Ham have made an offer to sign the 22-year-old Brazilian.

As reported by journalist Jorge Nicola on the Canal do Nicola YouTube channel [15/08/21], West Ham have tabled a proposal to the side managed by ex-Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo.

Wagner Ribeiro, agent to Gomes, said: “West Ham wanted Igor Gomes on loan, with financial compensation. Sao Paulo refused. It’s not interesting for Sao Paulo, nor for the player.” [Added translation via Fox Sports Brazil Twitter]

On the cheap again?

Why are we not buying players outright?

So far, the only new signing for the senior team has been Alphonse Areola from PSG, and he was a loan signing that is not guaranteed a spot in the starting XI.

Now we’re hearing that the Irons have made a loan bid to sign Gomes. Where’s all the money gone?

Of course, signing a player on loan eliminates the risk element behind the deal as, if there is no mandatory purchase option at the end of the loan, we can send them back to their parent club.

That’s particularly attractive in the case of someone like Gomes who, despite dazzling for Sao Paulo and Brazil under-23s, is an unknown quantity on the European stage.

But unless the terms of the loan deal are attractive for the parent club, why would they send him out on a temporary basis?

Furthermore, it seems as if the deal was not even tempting to Gomes himself.

It could be an arduous last couple of weeks of the transfer window.
