Jarrod Bowen was let down by West Ham teammates vs Bournemouth – here’s why

West Ham missed a major opportunity to boost their Premier League survival chances on Saturday.

Nuno Espirito Santo‘s side played out a goalless draw with Bournemouth at the London Stadium on Saturday evening, with neither team particularly happy with a point.

West Ham knew that a win over the Cherries would put them level on points with Nottingham Forest in 17th ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Sunday, but instead, they are still two points inside the relegation zone.

Liverpool’s will host West Ham at Anfield next Saturday, and with each opportunity passed up, the Hammers’ chances of avoiding the Championship drop grow slimmer.

Jarrod Bowen should be furious with West Ham teammates

West Ham dominated large periods of Saturday’s draw with Bournemouth, but no matter how hard they knocked on the Cherries’ door, the Hammers just couldn’t drive a nail through it.

Indeed, United registered 20 shots on the Bournemouth goal, but just three of them were on target and forced Djordje Petrovic into making a save.

Bournemouth have Petrovic, and West Ham’s wasteful finishing to thank for taking a point back home with them, and that will be much to the infuriation of Hammers skipper Jarrod Bowen.

As detailed in the above graphic from Sofascore, Bowen played five key passes against Bournemouth (pass that directly leads to a teammate’s shot), and contested 15 duels, winning seven.

The 29-year-old delivered nine crosses, attempted five dribbles and made seven defensive contributions, showing just much he put himself about down the right for the Hammers.

It is, however, that five key passes stat that sums up why Bowen must be furious with his attacking comrades in particular, as he provided ample opportunities for his teammates to score against Bournemouth which weren’t taken.

Meanwhile, striker Taty Castellanos took three shots at the Cherries’ goal, with none of them being on target, whilst Callum Wilson also had three efforts on goal with one on target, including one big chance missed.

Hammers will owe so much to Bowen if they survive

Bowen has had better seasons as a West Ham player in terms of production, but he may never have played a more important, impactful role for the Hammers than this term.

His team are in grave danger of being relegated to the second tier, but their talisman forward is doing everything he can to not let that happen.

Prior to Bournemouth, Bowen had provided at least one direct goal contribution in three of his last four games, with his total Premier League tally on the year now sitting at eight goals and three assists in 27 appearances.

Bowen has already cemented hero status as a West Ham player, but when they tell of his Hammers story years from now, it may well be the chapter of how his performances led the club to safety in 2025-26 that could be the greatest of all.
