Scout Report

Technical Prowess

Fernandes is a highly technical midfielder with a refined passing range. His ability to receive the ball under pressure and turn into space allows West Ham to progress through the phases effectively. He possesses the vision to find those intricate passes that break opposition lines.

Transition Threat

He excels in the transition, acting as the bridge between defence and attack. Whether carrying the ball forward with his smooth dribbling or releasing wingers early, Fernandes is central to the Hammers’ counter-attacking threat.

Tactical Role

Often deployed as a number eight or advanced playmaker, his work rate and positional intelligence are crucial. Fernandes provides a creative spark while maintaining the tactical discipline required to excel in defensive transitions.

Mateus Fernandes: A special West Ham United talent

West Ham United may have been battling against relegation during the 2025-26 season, but Mateus Fernandes has been one of the rarer brighter notes for the Hammers. Signed in a £40million deal from Southampton, the Portuguese youngster is a technically gifted midfielder, who has grown in stature and confidence under Nuno Espirito Santo since the turn of the year. If the likes of Fernandes, captain Jarrod Bowen, and Crysencio Summerville can combine effectively in the closing months, then the Irons can definitely have enough to retain their Premier League status in the closing weeks of the campaign.

M. Fernandes in Profile: Contract Status and Market Value

Mateus Fernandes: What’s his value?

Since arriving at the London Stadium, Fernandes has quickly established himself as a technically gifted presence in the heart of West Ham United’s midfield. According to Transfermarkt, his current market value is around **£30.4million**. However, given that is less than what West Ham actually paid for him (upwards of **£40m**), you could expect to see a significantly higher fee demanded should the Hammers have to sell.

What is his contract situation?

Fernandes signed a contract that runs until the **summer of 2030** when he joined from Southampton. Essentially, this means that even in the worst-case scenario of relegation, the Hammers hold a strong negotiating point should they have to sell their Portuguese gem to balance the books.

How important is Fernandes to Nuno Espirito Santo’s system?

He is absolutely fundamental. In Nuno’s setup, Fernandes acts as the main protagonist in the transition, acting as the main link between defence and attack when trying to launch counters for the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville.

Would relegation lead to a sale?

It would be a difficult situation to manage. While Fernandes has the quality to walk into most top-flight sides, he is also exactly the type of profile needed to mount a promotion charge. However, the financial realities of the Championship often dictate that high-value assets like Fernandes are moved on to balance the books.

If West Ham get relegated, would you sell Fernandes this summer?

Yes. It will be tough, but we could reinvest the money wisely.
No. He will be crucial in helping us get out of the Championship.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s love for ‘immense’ Mateus Fernandes

Like many in a West Ham United shirt this season, it was a little bit of a slow burn to start seeing the best ouf of Fernandes.

But in recent weeks, he has really stepped it up and has been influential in dragging the Hammers right back into the fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Nuno recently spot glowingly about his young midfield talent, and said he was fully deserving of a first call to Portugal’s senior men’s squad, which arrived in March 2026.

“I think he is playing well, competing well, and he is improving,” Nuno said.

“He is a player with immense quality and he carries a lot of responsibility within the team. His call-up to the national team is fully deserved.”
