Wilson faces extremely awkward West Ham welcome after previous comment

Callum Wilson will have some making up to do when he joins West Ham.

The Hammers are set to sign Wilson on a free transfer after he left Newcastle at the end of the season, with a contract agreed upon.

For starters, Wilson enjoyed playing against the London Stadium side, notching 12 goals in 16 matches against the Irons.

However, it is his previous comments on the club that may make it an awkward welcome for the 33-year-old rather than his goalscoring record.

Wilson has previously mocked West Ham success

West Ham won the Europa Conference League in 2023 under David Moyes, which was their first trophy in 43 years.

Michail Antonio was part of that success, and Wilson mocked him on the Footballers’ Football Podcast, which the duo hosted.

Speaking on the platform in September 2023, the former Magpies star said: “I’ve got a European trophy on FIFA as well, it’s the same thing!”

However, he also said: “I don’t want to be too harsh on West Ham, because it’s only Michail I don’t like, not the West Ham fans!”

Therefore, maybe it is only Antonio who will have an issue with the comments.

West Ham will forget about Wilson’s comments if he starts well

Wilson’s previous banter against the East London side will surely be forgotten if he starts his reign positively once he gets onto the pitch.

Graham Potter‘s side are desperate for goals, after the likes of Niclas Fullkrug and loanee Evan Ferguson failed to have the required impact last season.

The hope will be that the veteran can exceed expectations in E20 and come up with the goals that Potter’s team need to thrive rather than struggling towards the bottom end of the division once again.

At his best, Wilson is a clinical finisher, who always finds himself in the right positions, but injuries have taken their toll over the last few seasons.

It will take a lot for him to rediscover his form, but Potter and Co need to take a gamble on a competent attacker and the former Bournemouth striker fits the bill.

It is not the most impressive signing for supporters, especially considering those comments, but it could prove to be an inspired deal for David Sullivan, if he can find his touch again in front of goal.
