Will Still looks sure to be new West Ham United manager as announcement made on Thursday

West Ham are surely now set to turn to Will Still as their next managerial appointment following a statement released by Reims on Thursday (2 May).

The Ligue 1 club announced on their official website that their English head coach is to step down at the end of the campaign.

Still has long been considered a West Ham manager in waiting, having attended games at London Stadium this season and openly admitted to supporting the club.

Will Still has good record as Reims boss

The 31-year-old is regarded as one of the hottest young coaching talents in European football thanks to his work in France.

Still started his Reims tenure with a 14-game unbeaten streak, in turn making him a household name on these shores as it emerged his club had to pay €25,000 (£21.4m) in a fine for every match he managed.

That was due to the Belgian-born coach not having the relevant badges, but that has since been sorted.

After an 11th-placed finish last season, Still’s Reims side sit in that exact same position with three games of the 2023-24 campaign remaining.

Reims’ statement confirmed that Still’s decision to step down was mutual, but from an outside perspective it seems unusual.

David Moyes on way out of West Ham United

It comes amid those strong recent rumours linking him with the London Stadium job, which David Moyes seems certain to vacate in the coming weeks.

Still may not have managed on these shores, but his work in France, plus the small matter of him having the Irons close to his heart, makes him an easy choice to appoint.

Julen Lopetegui and Paulo Fonseca’s names to do not get the juices flowing, whereas the Still era at London Stadium could be very exciting.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but there would surely not be too many United fans disheartened if the next statement regarding Still is announcing him as West Ham United’s next manager.
