WHZ View: Same again? Remembering the last West Ham win at the Etihad
West Ham face-off with top of the table Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hammers are full of confidence at the moment. We defeated Spurs 2-1 on Sunday to move into the top four, thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard.
We’ll be looking to go five undefeated in the league against City, but it’ll be no easy task. Pep Guardiola’s men have won their last 19 matches in all competitions.
It’s a big clash with two very much in form sides and a win would be huge.
With that in mind, West Ham Zone thought we should revisit our last win at the Etihad…
19/09/15 – Manchester City 1-2 West Ham United
Managed by Slaven Bilic, West Ham came into this match having won three of their five matches in the 2015/16 campaign. This included big away wins to Arsenal and Liverpool.
City, managed by Manuel Pellegrini, had taken maximum points from their opening five fixtures, including a 3-0 thumping of the champions, Chelsea.
We started quickly, going ahead after six minutes thanks to a long-range effort from Victor Moses. He picked up the ball in the City half and was invited to shoot as Kolarov chose to back off. The Nigerian fired past Joe Hart at his near post to give us a shock lead.
It was the first goal City had conceded in the league for 572 minutes and was soon followed by a second.
A Dimtri Payet header was met by the towering Winston Reid. He nodded down to Pedro Obiang, who turned the ball into the path of Diafra Sakho. The Senegal international slotted in past Hart to give us a two-goal advantage after 31 minutes played.
De Bruyne struck back in typical fashion seconds before the end of the half. The Belgian swept home from 20 yards, finding Adrian’s bottom corner with ease. City had 27 attempts on goal overall in the game, and a staggering 71% of possession.
They couldn’t break down the resilient hammers again, though, who held out for a famous 2-1 win. We became only the fourth team to win away to Liverpool, Arsenal and City in the same season.
This was also the first time we’d won three consecutive Premier League away games since September of 2007.
More of the same on Saturday, please?
